Codecanyon is one of the largest Marketplace to buy WordPress plugins and PHP scripts and there are a lot of amazing PHP utilities out there to buy. I had bought many WordPress plugins and some of the scripts and I found some of them are really rocking. To write this article, is an aim to alert you that a lot of stuff on Codecanyon may be under developed or victim of stopped development by their authors. I have been a victim of this issue, purchasing some of this kind of products there.

help-icon Something very bad, Happened to me

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

I was unaware of this issue and I blindly bought some plugins and themes, having seen Live demo and features of them, mentioned on the product page. I did not read customer reviews and didn’t  inquire much ( it is my biggest fault).

After purchasing a plugin ( Ultimate Ajax Grid ), I found a serious bug in that. I wrote a comment to the author on the  comment section of  product page, but did never get any reply.

On product page, there was written in big words “ 7 Days Awesome Ticket Support”. I created a ticket but never got any reply from the author. Actually, I did not read the customer comments on Product comment section where users of this product were thrusting for support and facing the same bug that I had.

I felt totally robbed and just took a sigh, thinking that all my invested money was lost. But still I was waiting for author’s reply or a plugin update till several months. One day, when I logged into my Codecanyon account and accessed download list, I found that product was no longer available in my Download section because it was removed from Codecanyon website. Simply, the author stopped development of that plugin and the plugin was then removed from the marketplace ( may be ). Existing users who were utilizing that plugin were unable to get updates of that plugin according to changes in WordPress core. They had only two options; either leave the plugin or hire a 3rd party developer to maintain the plugin for them.

So, I don’t want that it would happen to you as it happened to me. There are some things to consider before making a purchase from Themeforest or Codecanyon

If a Codecanyon Plugin or a Themeforest theme impresses you or it fits your needs then run this three step analysis before buying it.

  • First of all check the date when the product was added on marketplace and last update date of product. This will help you in finding out whether product developer is working on product development actively or not
  • Then check the total sales of the productsince the product was added on marketplace. If product sales / month are a very few, you should ignore purchasing that theme/plugin or PHP script because the developer may stop development of the product due to low success rate of his product.
  • If the product passes both of the above given benchmarks then read the user comments on the product page Comment section. Don’t be in hurry and read at least one or two pages of comments and find out user opinions regarding the product. In comments, you can also find whether the developer is responding to users comments or not. I strictly advise you not to buy the product if the developer of that product is not replying to the comments in the product section because it simply means, either he stopped the product development or he is not providing support for that product.

help-icon Conclusion

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Here, on this page, I am not at all saying that Themeforest or Codecanyon are the bad places to buy reliable themes and plugins, I just want to say that these websites are marketplaces and there are thousands of developers out there who list there products. You need to find a good product backed by a reliable developer who would take care of his product and customers very well.
